Staff RN - Night Option

This is a Full-time Night Option position working 3 12 hours shifts Monday through Thursday 7:00 P.M. - 7:00 A.M. The Night option RN receives premium pay of base plus 30%.

Primary Function 

The staff nurse is a professional Registered Nurse, who is responsible for the direct nursing care of those patients assigned to his/her unit. The nurse will use professional judgment in supervising other members assigned to that unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

• Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. Uses safe medication practices.
• Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patient and reassessments as per policy.
• Wears identification which clearly identifies the nurse as a RN when providing direct patient care unless wearing identification creates a safety or health risk for either nurse or patient.
• Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard to care for patients age.
• Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patient and family.
• Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Interacting professionally with patient/family and involving patient/family in patient teaching and plan of care.
• Revises standardized discharge instructions, based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
• Participates in team conferences, sharing knowledge, information, and ideas among team members.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians and co-workers. Uses communication tools (SBART) during handoff.
• Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
• Coordinates, provides and supervises patient care as necessary.
• Demonstrates an ability to assist practitioners with procedures.
• Demonstrates an ability to be flexible and organized. Ability to function well under stressful situations.
• Records information concisely, accurately, and completely. Documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Assists in the orientation of new personnel when requested.
• Assumes role of charge nurse as needed. Is a proactive efficient leader that delegates appropriately, communicates patient/department needs to all those needing the information, participates in physician rounding, assesses current and next shift staffing needs, and monitors shift flow and efficiency.
• Assumes role as ER nurse as scheduled:
o Assures emergency department is ready for any emergency at any time.
o Familiar with ER standards of care.
o Demonstrates ability to efficiently and appropriately triage ER patients.
o Uses critical thinking skills to be proactive in efficiently getting the right patient to the right resources at the right place and at the right time.
• Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Education, Experience and Training

a. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
b. Current State of Iowa Nursing license.
c. BLS, ACLS and PALS certification within 6 month of hire.
d. Must have the ability to work with associated technologies relevant to the position.
